Birkensee is a groundwater-fed lake located east of Laatzen at the edge of a small woodland area within the Gaim-Bockmer Holz landscape protection zone. The bathing area features a sand beach with an adjacent generous sunbathing meadow. Access is restricted to campers staying at the adjacent campsite and paying day visitors. Swimming is at the visitor's own risk with no lifeguard supervision.
