Bocca di Magra Debby Ross is a small coastal bathing area in Liguria, Italy, consisting of an artificial rocky breakwater to the east coinciding with the jetty of the Bocca di Magra marina, and a sandy beach to the west. The area is located at the mouth of the Magra River in an urbanized context. Water quality in the 2020–2023 period was classified as excellent.

Water

Coastal water body at the mouth of the Magra River. Area extends 0.275 km². The bathing water area is bordered to the east by the Magra River mouth.

Location

Ameglia municipality, La Spezia province, Liguria region, Italy. Located at the mouth of the Magra River opposite the inhabited settlement of Bocca di Magra. The Bocca di Magra marina is approximately 200 metres northeast of the sampling station.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2020–2023: Excellent. Two sewage conduits pass near the bathing area: one approximately 40 metres northeast of the sampling point within the bathing water, and a second approximately 180 metres southwest outside the bathing area. Both conduits discharge into the sea at distances of approximately 500 metres and 1.7 kilometres from the beach.

Risks

During periods of upstream problems and heavy rainfall, increased water flow from streams may transport sewage downstream. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae blooms have been detected in the regional monitoring network; previous exceedances of the 30,000 cells per litre limit were recorded at the reference station in Fiascherino in July 2019 and June 2022. Inhalation of aerosol from Ostreopsis ovata can cause temporary and reversible respiratory tract problems and fever-like symptoms in sensitive individuals.
