Punta Sanità is a bathing water area in Ameglia, Liguria, comprising a sandy beach on the eastern side and rocky cliffs on the western side. The area is located within the Montemarcello Magra River Park, a natural protected area with forests of angiosperms and conifers. The bathing water extends 0.487 km and is classified as excellent based on monitoring from 2020–2023. The beach is open to the public with tourist services available.

Location

Ameglia, La Spezia Province, Liguria region. The Montemarcello Magra River Park is located upstream. A regional road (SP29) runs through the area.

Water Quality

Classification: Excellent (2020–2023 monitoring period). Two sewage pipes discharge offshore approximately 30 m west and 220 m north of the sampling point. A tourist marina at Bocca di Magra is located approximately 380 m to the east. The Ligurian Sea is characterised by oligotrophic conditions with no cyanobacterial blooms. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae proliferation has been recorded in the region over the past decade; the reference station at Fiascherino recorded exceedances of the 30,000 cells/litre limit in July 2019 and June 2022, with intermediate values (10,000–30,000 cells/litre) in July 2019, September 2020, and July 2021–2022.

Risks

Two sewage pipes discharge offshore, located approximately 500 m and 1.7 km from the beach. Heavy rainfall upstream can increase torrent flow and transport effluent downstream. Ostreopsis ovata blooms can cause temporary and reversible respiratory symptoms and fever in sensitive individuals through aerosol inhalation.
