Vallesanta Lato Ovest is a bathing water located at the western end of the Levanto Gulf in Bonassola, Liguria. The beach is predominantly sandy and pebbly in character. The area is tourist and recreational in nature, with private bathing establishments present. The water body was newly introduced to the bathing water register in 2019, inheriting an Excellent classification from the previous monitoring period (2015–2018).

Water

Coastal water categorized as Mountainous Regions with Low Stability (CWA3). Water body name: Moneglia-Levanto. Area: 1.315 km. The shoreline is characterized predominantly by pebbly beaches.

Location

Located in Bonassola, La Spezia province, Liguria, at the western extremity of the Levanto Gulf. The responsible authority is the Municipality of Bonassola (Via Iside Beverino 1, 19011 Bonassola, SP; tel 0187 81381).

Facilities

Private bathing establishments are present in the tourist and recreational area.

Water Quality

Classification: Excellent (inherited from 2015–2018 monitoring of the predecessor water body IT007011017002). The water quality monitoring from 2019 onwards applies to this newly registered bathing area.

Risks

A discharge pipe is located approximately 1.5 km from the coast. During heavy precipitation, increased water flow in the Rio Rossola and Rio Rossola estuary may transport sewage downstream. Ostreopsis ovata microalgal blooms have been observed in the region over the past decade; monitoring reference station at Sestri Levante recorded values between 10,000–30,000 cells/litre in July 2017, with no exceedances of the 30,000 cells/litre limit since 2015. Inhalation of aerosol from Ostreopsis ovata can cause temporary and reversible respiratory tract symptoms and fever in sensitive individuals.
