Fiumaretta is a coastal bathing area consisting of a series of sandy beaches located east of the Magra River mouth in Liguria, Italy. The area is subject to erosive phenomena with variations in the shoreline, for which coastal defence measures have been implemented. The beach is equipped with private establishments, accommodation facilities, dining services, and water sports activities including surfing, connected to a tourist marina.

Water

Coastal waters at the mouth of the Magra River. The bathing area extends 1.294 km along the coast and comprises sandy beaches subject to erosive phenomena.

Location

Located in the municipality of Ameglia, province of La Spezia, Liguria. The bathing area extends east of the Magra River mouth. Nearest town contact: Comune di Ameglia, Via Caffaggio 15, 19031 Ameglia SP. Emergency number: 112.

Facilities

Private beach establishments, accommodation facilities, dining services, water sports facilities (surfing), fishing activities, and a tourist marina. Animals are permitted.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2020–2023: Good. Two sewage outfalls discharge approximately 500 m and 1.7 km from the shore. No treatment plants are present in the area. Heavy precipitation upstream can potentially cause transport of sewage downstream. Ostreopsis ovata microalgal blooms have occurred regionally in recent years; the reference monitoring station at ANMI Sarzana recorded no exceedances of the 30,000 cells/litre limit from 2019 to 2023, though values between 10,000–30,000 cells/litre were recorded in July and September 2019 and July 2022.

Risks

Short-duration pollution events possible during upstream critical conditions and heavy rainfall, which can increase stream flow and transport of effluents downstream. Ostreopsis ovata blooms can cause temporary and reversible respiratory effects and fever in sensitive individuals through aerosol inhalation.
