Lake Constance (Bodensee) at Sporthafen Bregenz is the third-largest inland lake in central Europe, shared by Germany, Switzerland, and Austria without fixed borders. The lake experienced severe eutrophication in the late 1970s due to untreated wastewater discharge, leading to excessive algae blooms. Construction of wastewater treatment facilities in the catchment area has successfully reversed this condition. The bathing water at Sporthafen Bregenz is monitored regularly for microbiological quality and is designated as a public bathing beach.
