Lake Constance (Bodensee) is the third-largest inland lake in Central Europe, shared by Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. The Bregenz beach bathing area is located in Austria. The lake experienced eutrophication in the late 1970s due to untreated wastewater discharges, but systematic expansion of wastewater treatment plants in the catchment area has led to significant improvements.
