Børsmose Strand

Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Børsmose Strand is a bathing beach located on the west coast of Denmark at Vesterhavet, positioned west of Børsmose campground. The beach and seabed consist primarily of sand, with gravel and stones occurring occasionally. The beach is approximately 160–220 metres wide depending on high or low tide. Water exchange and salinity of approximately 3% support excellent water quality conditions.

Water

Coastal seawater (Vesterhavet, the North Sea). Water salinity approximately 3%. Depth and current conditions are highly variable due to tidal influence, with water becoming deep quickly. Sandbars (revels) run parallel to the coastline.

Location

Varde Municipality, west coast of Denmark. Located west of Børsmose campground, approximately 3.4 km north of Kærgård Plantage and 5.1 km north of Vejers Strand. Parking is available on the beach north of the Langsø Kanal outlet.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (Udmærket kvalitet). Classification is based on analysis of the last four years of monitoring data measuring Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Annual classifications: 2023 Excellent, 2022 Excellent, 2021 Excellent, 2020 Excellent. Potential pollution sources include Langsø Kanal outlet, which carries low fecal pollution risk due to absence of wastewater treatment plant discharges. Contamination from chemical dumping in Kærgård Plantage (1956–1973) affects groundwater; a bathing prohibition zone of 1400 metres extends between Henne Mølleå and Børsmose Strand as a precaution.

Risks

Dangerous rip currents can form between sandbars running parallel to the coast; these currents flow from shore seaward and can be too strong to swim against. Phytoplankton and foam-forming algae may occasionally be driven onshore by wind and weather, potentially causing skin irritation; seaweed accumulations may contain bacteria causing gastrointestinal symptoms. Vibrio and Shewanella bacteria naturally present in seawater can cause illness in immunocompromised individuals, though they typically do not reach high concentrations at Vesterhavet unless water temperature exceeds 20°C for extended periods. Blue-green algae do not occur at the west coast due to high salinity.
