Vejers Strand is a bathing site located at Vesterhavet (the North Sea) west of the town of Vejers in Varde Kommune, Denmark. The beach is composed primarily of sand with occasional gravel and stones, and is 160–220 metres wide depending on tide levels. The area between Vejers Strand and Blåvandshuk Fyr contains a large military training range that is closed to public access during exercises. The bathing water has achieved the highest classification of excellent quality based on four years of monitoring for indicator bacteria.

North Sea (Vesterhavet). Beach composed primarily of sand with occasional gravel and stones. Beach width 160–220 metres depending on tide. Water salinity approximately 3%.

Location

West of Vejers, Varde Kommune, Denmark. Parking is available on the beach south of the Ålestrømmen outlet.

Water Quality

Bathing water classification: Excellent (Udmærket). Classification based on analysis of Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci from the last four years of monitoring. Annual classifications: 2023 excellent, 2022 excellent, 2021 excellent, 2020 excellent.

Risks

Depth and current conditions vary significantly due to tidal forces, currents, sediment deposits, and weather. Water deepens quickly offshore. Sandbars parallel to the coast can form dangerous rip currents that flow from the beach seaward; these currents can be too strong to swim against and require swimmers to drift with the current until it weakens. Prevailing current direction in Vesterhavet is northward, with southward currents near the coast. Seaweed (kelp/macroalgae) rarely occurs in significant quantities at the west coast. Foam-producing planktonic algae may be washed ashore in some years and can irritate skin; accumulated seaweed washed ashore may contain bacteria causing gastrointestinal illness. Blue-green algae do not occur at Vesterhavet due to its salt content. Marine bacteria (Vibrio and Shewanella) are present in seawater but typically do not occur in significant numbers; blooms require water temperatures above 20°C for extended periods.
