Henne Mølleå Strand

Henne Mølleå Strand is located at the outlet of Henne Mølleå stream where it meets the North Sea south of the Blue Flag beach at Henne. The beach comprises primarily sand with some gravel and stones, and measures 160–220 metres wide depending on tidal conditions. The bathing water has achieved the highest classification of excellent quality based on monitoring of indicator bacteria over the past four years. A 1,400-metre section 530 metres south of the station is subject to bathing prohibition due to leachate from chemical waste deposited at Kærgård Plantation.

Water

North Sea. The beach and seabed consist primarily of sand. Water salinity is approximately 3%. Water depth and current conditions are highly variable due to tidal range, currents, sediment deposits, and weather conditions. The water generally becomes deep quickly, and currents can form sandbars parallel to the coast.

Location

Varde Municipality, Denmark. The beach is situated south of Henne along the west coast. Henne Strand is approximately 2.7 km to the north. Parking is available approximately 200 metres from the beach.

Water Quality

Bathing water classification: Excellent quality (2023, 2022, 2021, 2020). Classification is based on analysis of Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci over the past four years. Fecal pollution risk is considered low due to the absence of direct sewage discharges from treatment plants nearby. Sea water exchange and salinity mitigate pollution from bathers.

Risks

A 1,400-metre section of beach 530 metres south of the station is subject to bathing prohibition due to chemical waste leached from Kærgård Plantation, which was used as a disposal site for heavily contaminated wastewater from 1956 to 1973. Grundwater beneath the site remains contaminated with chlorinated solvents. Dangerous rip currents can form between sandbars parallel to the coast. Vibrio and Shewanella bacteria naturally occur in seawater and can cause illness, particularly in people with weakened immune systems; however, these bacteria typically do not occur in large numbers at the North Sea and only proliferate when water temperature exceeds 20°C for extended periods. Foam-forming algae occasionally appear during certain years and may cause skin irritation; people and animals should avoid contact with algal foam.
