Henne Strand is a bathing water location on the North Sea coast west of the town of Henne Strand in Varde Municipality, Denmark. The beach and seabed consist primarily of sand, with gravel and stones occasionally present. The beach is approximately 100 to 127 metres wide depending on tidal conditions. The bathing water has achieved the highest quality classification of Excellent based on monitoring over the last four years.

Water

North Sea (Vesterhavet). The water has a salinity of approximately 3%. Water depth and current conditions are highly variable due to tidal forces, currents, sediment deposition, and weather conditions. The water generally becomes deep quickly, and currents can form sandbanks parallel to the coast with potentially dangerous rip currents between them.

Location

Henne Strand is located west of the town of Henne Strand on the North Sea coast in Varde Municipality, Denmark. It is the third northernmost bathing station along the west coast of Varde Kommune, approximately 2.8 kilometres north of Houstrup Strand and 2.7 kilometres south of Henne Mølleå. Parking is available approximately 50 metres from the beach.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (Udmærket kvalitet). This classification is based on monitoring from the last four years (2020–2023), with all years receiving an Excellent rating. Water samples are analysed for Escherichia coli (E. coli) and intestinal enterococci bacteria as faecal contamination indicators. There are no direct wastewater or stream discharges affecting bathing water quality. The town of Henne Strand has only partial sewerage, with other areas using septic tank systems. The nearest holiday homes are approximately 200 metres from the beach and do not affect water quality.

Risks

Rip currents and strong underwater currents can form between sandbanks parallel to the coast, which can be dangerous. These currents may be too powerful to swim against and swimmers should allow themselves to be carried out and return to shore as the current weakens. Dominant current direction in the North Sea is northerly, with southerly currents close to the shore. Foam-forming algae and water discolouration can occasionally occur due to algal blooms driven by wind and weather; bathing is not recommended under these conditions. Sea bacteria such as Vibrio and Shewanella species can cause illness through ingestion or contact with open wounds, particularly in immunocompromised individuals, though these typically do not occur in large numbers at the North Sea coast. Blue-green algae do not occur at the North Sea coast due to the water's high salinity.
