Coastal bathing water of the Atlantic Ocean. The site is influenced by ocean and meteorological conditions typical of the Atlantic coast.

Location

Piriac-sur-Mer is a coastal commune in Loire-Atlantique department, Pays de la Loire region, France. It is part of the Cap Atlantique intercommunal grouping. The site is bordered to the west and north by the Atlantic Ocean and to the south by the Brandu stream.

Season

Official bathing season: 15 June to 15 September.

Water Quality

Water quality classification under Directive 76/160/CEE (2007–2010): consistently 10A (good quality). Under Directive 2006/7/CE (2004–2010): classified as good to excellent. One recorded pollution episode on 29/08/2006 of bacteriological origin related to rainfall, with no bathing prohibition imposed. Main identified pollution sources include stormwater outfalls (weak to moderate impact), non-compliant wastewater systems (weak to moderate impact, 150 m from beach), and a pumping station malfunction (weak to moderate impact, 250 m from beach).

Risks

Potential risks include stormwater outfalls at the beach, non-compliant septic systems in the vicinity, and pumping station dysfunction. Preventive beach closure procedures are in place in case of pumping station malfunction.
