The Naturbadestelle Lübben/Steinkirchen is a natural bathing site on the Spree River in Lübben, Brandenburg. The Spree originates in the Upper Lusatian Highlands in Saxony and flows approximately 400 km before joining the Havel in Berlin. In the Lübben area, the river's gradient is low and flow speed is approximately 17 cm per second. Water visibility at the bathing site varies seasonally between 0.8 and 2.0 m with a mean of 1.6 m. The site experiences moderate bird populations and medium fish stock.

River (Spree). Very large catchment area (≥10,000 km²). Lowland elevation (<200 m). Sand and meadow banks. Water transparency: 0.8–2.0 m, mean 1.6 m. pH range: 7.59–7.88, mean 7.66. Water temperature range: 14–24 °C, mean 20 °C. Freshwater (salinity <0.5 ‰). Beach length: 50 m.

Water Quality

Classified as 'excellent' for all monitoring periods from 2014–2017 through 2021–2024. Escherichia coli 95-percentile values range from 145–182 CFU/100 mL. Intestinal enterococci 95-percentile values range from 31–46 CFU/100 mL. No individual parameter exceedances recorded. No cyanobacterial blooms observed. Ecological status class: poor (ÖZK 5). Water quality has improved significantly; nutrient levels approximately halved since early 1990s. No short-term microbial pollution or other pollution expected.

Risks

Macroalgae and aquatic plants present. No danger from cyanobacterial mass development. No risk of bathing dermatitis from cercariae. No other significant risks identified.
