Canale Tagliata Nord is a sandy beach located in Cesenatico in the Emilia-Romagna region, extending from the Ravenna/Forlì-Cesena provincial border to the Canale Tagliata South pier. The beach is 80–90 metres wide and unprotected by cliffs, with a natural seabed featuring submerged bars. The area is a high-traffic tourist zone with numerous hotels and bathing establishments.

Water

Coastal marine water body. Area of 0.379 km². The Canale Tagliata communicates with the Cesenatico Canal Port through the Connection Canal and flows into the sea at Zadina, accompanied by two small piers extending approximately 20 metres beyond the shoreline.

Location

Cesenatico, Forlì-Cesena Province, Emilia-Romagna region, Italy. Located at Zadina near the border with Cervia.

Facilities

Ten bathing establishments with first aid services, toilets accessible to disabled persons, hot showers, absence of architectural barriers, sports facilities, and food and beverage services.

Water Quality

Classified as Excellent (reference years 2020–2023). Escherichia coli (90th percentile): 25 CFU/100 ml; Escherichia coli (95th percentile): 31 CFU/100 ml. Intestinal enterococci (90th percentile): 10 CFU/100 ml; Intestinal enterococci (95th percentile): 10 CFU/100 ml. The Canale Tagliata does not discharge into the sea during the bathing season under normal conditions. Nine stormwater discharges from Cervia flow into the canal. Sewage from the Cervia agglomeration is treated at the Cervia treatment plant in compliance with Directive 91/271/CEE and discharged into the Cupa Nuovo Canal.

Risks

Exceptional precipitation or severe storms may trigger closure of the Vinciane Gates on the Cesenatico Canal Port, requiring opening of bypass gates that divert water from the Cesenatico Canal Port into the Canale Tagliata. The presence of the Canale Tagliata may trigger eutrophication phenomena. Phytoplankton bloom (Raphidophyceae Fibrocapsa japonica) was recorded in July 2022; no blooms were recorded in the 2020–2021 and 2023 bathing seasons. No macroalgae blooms or cyanobacterial events were recorded during 2020–2023.
