Caroual Nord and Caroual Centre are bathing beaches located in the commune of Erquy in the Côtes-d'Armor department. This vulnerability profile documents the physical, geographical, and hydrological characteristics of these beaches and their associated watersheds. The study identifies and evaluates pollution sources that may affect the bathing waters and assesses the potential for proliferation of cyanobacteria, macroalgae, and phytoplankton. The profile serves as a management tool to protect water quality and public health in accordance with EU Directive 2006/7/CE.

Commune of Erquy, Côtes-d'Armor department, France.

Water Quality

Water quality monitoring conducted by ARS (Regional Health Agency) from 2007 to 2011 for both Caroual Nord and Caroual Centre beaches. Microbiological monitoring network (REMI) conducted by IFREMER for shellfish production zones. Phytoplankton and phycotoxin surveillance network (REPHY) monitored by IFREMER. Quality classification available for both beaches.

Risks

Potential pollution sources identified including collective sewerage systems, non-collective sanitation systems, stormwater networks discharging directly to sea, and other pollution sources. Fecal contamination patterns correlated with rainfall, distance from rain events, sampling period, and tidal conditions. Potential for macroalgae proliferation assessed.
