Cerusa is a bathing water area located in the Genoa Voltri municipality in Liguria, Italy. The beach is characterized by mixed sandy and pebbly sand, formed primarily by the river bar at the mouth of the Cerusa Stream. The area is situated in a heavily urbanized and industrialized context with tourist and residential characteristics. The water body has no valuable biocenosis within the bathing area; beyond 20 meters depth, coastal mud is present outside the bathing zone.

Coastal waters of the Ligurian Sea, Genoa-Voltri water body (ID IT07CW01001013). The bathing area extends 0.354 km. The beach is predominantly pebbly, composed largely of the river bar from the Cerusa Stream mouth. Beyond 20 meters depth, coastal mud is present outside the bathing zone.

Location

Genoa Voltri, Liguria, Italy. The bathing area is centered at coordinates 44.426787°N, 8.743190°E, with boundaries extending from 44.426414°N, 8.741263°E to 44.427147°N, 8.745122°E. The area covers 0.354 km. Nearby infrastructure includes the Bruzzone seafront promenade, State Road SS1, the highway overpass, Evangelical Hospital, the National Rescue Society, and a secondary school.

Water Quality

Classification for 2019–2022 period: Good. Quality assessment shows: 2019 had 2 non-compliant days due to pollution; 2020, 2021, and 2022 were always compliant. Previous classifications: Excellent (2017–2020), Good (2018–2021). The ecological status of the water body is Sufficient; chemical status is Good (according to River Basin Management Plan 2021). Pollution sources include an urban sewage pipe discharging approximately 240 meters from the shore, outside the bathing water area, and river pollution from the Cerusa Stream, which discharges at the sampling station.

Risks

Heavy rainfall can cause increased flow in the Cerusa Stream, potentially transporting effluents downstream. Microalgal proliferation of Ostreopsis ovata has occurred in the region; a reference station at Genoa Voltri recorded an exceedance of the 30,000 cells/liter limit in July 2022, with values between 10,000–30,000 cells/liter in August 2018 and July 2022. Inhalation of aerosol from Ostreopsis ovata can cause temporary and reversible respiratory tract problems and fever in sensitive individuals.
