Prada is a continental bathing zone located in a reservoir along the Xares River in A Veiga, Ourense province, Galicia, Spain. The reservoir sits at 847 metres altitude in a high-mountain area and features a rocky substrate composed primarily of granitic materials. The bathing area is designated as a recreational zone with meadow and sand beach, surrounded by planted poplar woodland and herbaceous vegetation.

Water

Prada Reservoir on the Xares River. Surface area 605.24 hectares, volume 121.07 cubic hectometres, maximum normal water level cota 845 metres. Hydroelectric reservoir with outlet capacity of 800 cubic metres per second.

Location

A Veiga municipality, Ourense province, Galicia. From Vilariño de Conso take the OU-533 towards A Veiga; after approximately 7 kilometres and passing the welcome sign for A Veiga, follow the indication for 'Área recreativa Os Franceses' on the left. No parking available.

Facilities

Bar/chiringuito, picnic areas, toilets, showers, waste bins, containers, boat landing dock, recreational zone, children's play area. No lifeguards, no rescue service, no information signs, no parking, no fountains.

Water Quality

Water quality was classified according to Royal Decree 1341/2007 during monitoring seasons 2011–2015. Microbial contamination assessment included measurement of Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci. Main identified contamination sources include wastewater from Casdenodres and A Veiga–O Coiñedo settlements (classified as significant pressure), diffuse contamination from extensive livestock farming (1,376 head of cattle, sheep, and pigs) and agricultural runoff, plus self-contamination from bathers during high-use periods.

Risks

Short-duration contamination risks identified: significant point-source discharges from wastewater treatment system failures; livestock farming runoff from manure storage ruptures or overflow; agricultural runoff from crops and meadows after heavy rain; accidental or illegal discharges; dead animals; organic waste; abnormally reduced reservoir water volume; sediment or sludge disturbance.
