The Río Cenza bathing area is located in Vilariño de Conso, Ourense province, Galicia, Spain. It is a section of a humid siliceous mountain river with a single, slightly sinuous channel characterised by abundant stones and large boulders, with granitic rocky substrate. The river is channelised through the bathing zone with protection on both margins and three summer dams that create bathing pools. Mountain river (Río Cenza), part of the Conso sub-basin within the Sil-Miño watershed. The bathing zone has an embankment volume of 1,555 m³. Summer mean discharge is 6,480 m³/h. The river bed consists of stone pitching and concrete. Average environmental flow is 0.77 m³/s. The four-year return period discharge is 6,900 m³/s.

Vilariño de Conso, Ourense province, Galicia, Spain. Access via the OUR-CU-346 road towards Soutelo, following signs towards the sports complex on the right. Parking is available at the site.

Water Quality

Water quality classified according to Royal Decree 1341/2007. Monitoring data from 2011-2015 shows measurement of Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci (CFU/100 ml). Possible contamination episodes affecting bather health would occur at discharges below 0.058 m³/s. Self-contamination from bathers and diffuse sources from extensive livestock grazing (sheep) and agricultural runoff are identified risks.

Diffuse contamination from extensive livestock farming (sheep grazing near bathing area), agricultural runoff, accidental or illegal discharges, dead animals, and organic waste. Light algal coating observed on some rocks in the river bed. Risk of short-duration contamination from various diffuse and point sources.
