The Sil River bathing area in Barco de Valdeorras is a river beach located in the municipality of Barco de Valdeorras in Ourense province, Galicia, Spain. The bathing zone is also known as Playa Fluvial or Malecón and is situated in the lower Sil River system within the Miño-Sil hydrographic demarcation. The river bed comprises rounded stones with some adherent sediment, while the beach is sandy. The water body supports populations of trout and some cyprinid fish species.

River. The Sil River in the lower Sil system. The catchment area of the influence zone is 27.60 square kilometres with a perimeter of 24.96 kilometres. Maximum elevation 1360 metres, minimum elevation 320 metres. Mean monthly discharge 55.7 mm/month. Mean annual precipitation 668.8 mm/year. Monthly average flow rates vary from approximately 15.686 cubic metres per second in July-September to 29.711 cubic metres per second in January-March. River bed composed of rounded stones with some adhering mud. Beach surface is sandy.

Location

Barco de Valdeorras, Ourense, Galicia, Spain. Access via Avenida Conde de Fenosa (former N-120) from Ourense, turning right at Calle Doctor Pérez Lista near the town hall, continuing to Plaza de José Otero at the mouth of Arroyo Riocigüeño, which leads to the river beach. Parking is available.

Facilities

Rescue post, informational signs, waste bins, toilets, two showers, two containers, recreation use area, snack bar/bar, picnic areas, water fountains. Sewage from toilets, showers, snack bar, and other facilities connects to the general collector or public waterway.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as sufficient according to Royal Decree 1341/2007 based on intestinal enterococcus and Escherichia coli monitoring data from 2011-2015. The surface water body (Santiago Reservoir) has good or better status. Monitoring shows variations in microbial contamination with multiple point sources including urban wastewater treatment from various facilities discharging into the Sil and Baludo rivers, an industrial source from slate processing, and diffuse sources from livestock farming and agricultural runoff.

Potential short-duration contamination from: significant point source discharges due to treatment system failure or sewage network leaks; livestock runoff from manure storage tank rupture or overflow; runoff from heavy rain affecting livestock farms, meadows, or crops; high bather numbers during weekends; accidental or illegal dumping; dead animals; sediment remobilization from heavy rain; organic waste from heavy rain or bathers; reduced river flow combined with livestock storage tank overflow or wastewater discharge.
