Eriks Hale

Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Eriks Hale is a bathing beach located in Marstal Bay approximately 0.5 km south of Marstal town in Denmark. The beach consists of fine sand with small and medium-sized stones, measuring 10–20 meters wide and 500 meters long. A 1-meter-wide belt of medium-sized stones forms at the water's edge. The seabed near the shore is sandy, covered with medium-sized stones for the first few meters, transitioning to sand with small stones farther out.

Water

Saltwater bay classified as the Fynske Øhav (Fynen Sea). Water depth is less than 2 meters approximately 150 meters from the shore. Current direction shifts approximately every 12 hours with tidal movement.

Location

Located in Marstal Bay, approximately 0.5 km south of Marstal town (population around 2,500). Access is via Østersøvej, which leads directly to the beach. Parking is available at the beach terminus. Toilet facilities with drinking water and disabled access are located opposite the parking area.

Season

Official bathing water classification is reviewed annually in May. Washed-up seaweed is removed regularly during the bathing season.

Water Quality

Bathing water is classified as Excellent quality based on data from 2019–2023. Classification is determined by microbiological monitoring of E. coli and enterococci levels. No sources of fecal pollution have been registered at this location.

Risks

Risk of seaweed (macroalgae) washing ashore at the water's edge; Ærø Municipality regularly removes washed-up seaweed during the bathing season. Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms is low; risk of phytoplankton blooms is low. Occasional occurrences of glass shards, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills are possible. Sudden pollution from recreational boat incidents, manure tanks, and sewage lines may occur.
