La Plagette is an artificial fine sand beach located in Mèze on the shores of Étang de Thau lagoon. The beach extends approximately 200 metres between the western pier of the Nacelles port and the rescue station of the House of the Sea. It is situated in the heart of the town of Mèze with highly urbanized surroundings. Sand is replenished at the beginning of each bathing season to maintain the beach.

Water

Étang de Thau lagoon. Maximum depth approximately 4.5 metres. The lagoon is the largest and deepest of the Languedoc lagoons, with an area of 7770 hectares designated as a Special Protection Zone (ZPS) under the Natura 2000 directive.

Location

Mèze, Hérault department, France. La Plagette is delimited to the south by the capitainerie and to the north by the port of the Nacelles. The beach is located on the shores of Étang de Thau.

Facilities

Rescue station (poste de secours) at the House of the Sea (Maison de la Mer). Sanitary facilities available. Display signage for information.

Season

Bathing season monitored annually, with sand replenishment at the beginning of each season.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as 'insufficient' according to directive 2006/7/CE based on sanitary control results from the four previous bathing seasons. The site is officially declared with the ARS and subject to a bathing water quality monitoring programme.

Risks

Type 3 profile: confirmed risk of contamination with insufficiently known causes. Potential pollution sources include urban context, wastewater treatment system rejections, non-collective sanitation systems, rainfall-driven discharges, agricultural activities, industrial activities, and nautical/port activities.
