Fanø Vesterhavsbad is a wide sandy beach located on Fanø's west coast facing Fanø Bay. The beach spans approximately 500 meters wide and 1,000 meters long, featuring fine sand with scattered small stones. The seafloor also consists of fine sand. The beach has three reefs where it is often possible to touch bottom, though footing between them is uncertain. Vehicle driving is permitted at a maximum of 30 km/h, and parking occurs on the beach itself.

Water

Saltwater bay (Fanø Bay). Water depth is less than 2 meters at 500 meters from the shore. The area is heavily influenced by tidal changes occurring approximately every 6 hours. The seafloor consists of fine sand.

Location

Fanø, Denmark. The beach is situated mid-way along Fanø's west coast, west of Fanø Vesterhavsbad. Parking is available on the beach, though not too close to the shoreline due to tidal effects. The beach is characterized by dunes separating the shore from the town.

Facilities

Toilet facilities, rescue rings available. The beach is well-visited and offers good facilities.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent. Classification is calculated based on routine monitoring samples taken over the most recent 4 bathing seasons and analysed for faecal indicator bacteria (E. coli and enterococci). The classification is reviewed annually before the bathing season begins. Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms is low. Risk of phytoplankton blooms is low. Risk of macroalgae accumulation is low.

Risks

Three reefs present; footing between them is uncertain. Strong offshore winds can occur on Fanø, making inflatable toys, air mattresses, and rubber boats inadvisable. Tidal currents require caution, especially during rising tide. Rindby Brook discharges south of the beach and can cause short-term faecal contamination during rainfall; bathing near the outlet is discouraged. Glass shards, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills may occur. The adjacent Søren Jessens Sand area has dangerously strong currents in Hamborgdybet; this area should not be visited in fog.
