Fegina is a bathing water located in the Cinque Terre area near Monterosso al Mare in Liguria. It features a rocky coast to the west and a sandy-pebbly beach in an eastern inlet. The area includes a small tourist harbour at its centre and is surrounded by both free public beach and private beach facilities with restaurants and accommodation.

Location

Water Quality

Classification for the 2020-2023 four-year monitoring period: Excellent. The water body is subject to urbanised context pollution, with a sewage pipe located west of the monitoring station discharging approximately 1 km offshore. Port-related pollution is present from the Monterosso Ponente tourist harbour. Microalgae proliferation of Ostreopsis ovata has occurred in Liguria over the past decade; however, the reference station at Monterosso (MONT) recorded no exceedances of the 30,000 cells/l limit or values between 10,000–30,000 cells/l from 2019 to 2023. The Ligurian Sea is not characterised by cyanobacterial blooms due to oligotrophic conditions.

Risks

Sewage discharge approximately 1 km offshore from a coastal treatment plant at Mesco. During rainfall events, increased stream discharge may transport effluent downstream from Valle Mine and Rio Fegina, which discharge directly into the bathing water. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae: inhalation of aerosol can cause temporary and reversible respiratory symptoms and fever in sensitive individuals.
