Foce Torrente Armea is a sandy beach located in the inlet of the Armea stream mouth in Sanremo, Liguria, Italy. The beach is delimited to the west by an artificial structure and is an unequipped public beach with food service activities. A coastal cycle path, seaside promenade, railway, and state road SS1 run behind the beach. The bathing water is classified as sufficient for the 2021–2024 four-year assessment period.

Water

Coastal waters in a mountainous region with low stability. The bathing area extends 0.255 km. The area is influenced by the Armea valley, which drains an area with numerous agricultural businesses, particularly flower nurseries and olive oil presses.

Location

Sanremo, Imperia Province, Liguria Region, Italy. The beach is located at the mouth of the Armea stream. Santo Stefano al Mare is the reference water body. A nautical shipyard is located immediately outside the western boundary of the bathing area.

Facilities

Unequipped public beach with food service activities available. A coastal cycle path of the Riviera dei Fiori park, seaside promenade, and railway are accessible behind the beach.

Water Quality

Classification: Sufficient (2021–2024 four-year period). Intensified monitoring is applied for the 2025 season due to the sufficient classification. The reference monitoring station is VASC at Santo Stefano al Mare. No exceedances of the Ostreopsis ovata limit (30,000 cells/litre) were recorded from 2020 to 2024, though a value between 10,000–30,000 cells/litre was registered in July 2022.

Risks

The Armea stream mouth discharges directly into the bathing water. A coastal treatment plant at Capo Verde di Bussana is located approximately 490 metres to the west with a sewer line discharging offshore at approximately 1.2 km from the shore. During heavy precipitation upstream, increased stream flow may transport wastewater downstream. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae blooms have occurred in Liguria over the past decade; inhalation of aerosol can cause temporary and reversible respiratory irritation and fever in sensitive individuals.
