Bussana is a sandy beach located in an urban area of Sanremo, Liguria. A hospital structure is situated immediately inland. The beach includes private bathing establishments with services and free beach areas, along with dining and accommodation facilities. The Riviera dei Fiori promenade, cycle path, state road SS1, and railway line run behind the beach. The bathing water was classified as Good for the 2021–2024 monitoring period.

Water

Coastal water body classified as mountainous rocky coast with low stability (CWA3). The bathing area extends 1.345 km. The Rio Fonti stream directly flows into the bathing water.

Location

Sanremo, province of Imperia, Liguria, Italy. The municipality office is located at Corso Cavallotti 59, 18038 San Remo IM.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2021–2024: Good. Two wastewater treatment plants are located outside the bathing water: the Bussana treatment plant approximately 1150 m to the west with a discharge pipe, and the Riva Ligure treatment plant approximately 1720 m to the east with a discharge pipe to the open sea. The Ligurian Sea does not experience cyanobacterial blooms due to predominantly oligotrophic conditions. Ostreopsis ovata microalgal proliferation has occurred in the region for approximately one decade. The reference station at Santo Stefano al Mare showed no exceedances of the 30,000 cells/litre limit from 2020 to 2024, though a value of 10,000–30,000 cells/litre was recorded in July 2022.

Risks

During heavy precipitation, increased stream discharge may transport wastewater downstream. Ostreopsis ovata blooms can cause temporary and reversible respiratory symptoms and fever in sensitive individuals through aerosol inhalation.
