Foce Torrente Borghetto is a pebble beach located in the urban centre of Bordighera, Liguria. The beach is equipped and open to the public, with accommodation facilities and restaurants nearby. The area is situated along the Argentina promenade, with the railway network and the SS1 road located inland. The bathing water was classified as Excellent for the 2020–2023 four-year evaluation period.

Coastal waters in a stream mouth zone with sandy and pebble sections fed by Torrente Borghetto. The bathing water area extends 0.137 km².

Location

Water Quality

Classification: Excellent (2020–2023 evaluation period). The bathing water is within Area 1 of the regional Ostreopsis monitoring network. At the reference station Tino in Mortola (Imperia), no exceedances of the 30,000 cells/litre limit or values between 10,000–30,000 cells/litre were recorded from 2020 to 2024.

Risks

Bordighera's wastewater treatment plant is located approximately 90 m north-west of the sampling station, with an active sewer outfall 1,300 m from the shore. The Torrente Borghetto mouth discharges directly into the bathing water. During heavy rainfall, increased stream flow may transport waste downstream. Ostreopsis ovata microalgal blooms have occurred in Liguria over the past decade; inhalation of aerosols can cause temporary and reversible respiratory effects and fever in sensitive individuals.
