Foce Torrente Steria is a small sandy beach in the municipality of Imperia in Liguria, Italy, bordered by artificial structures. It is an unequipped public beach located in a highly urbanized context near the town of Cervo. The water body is classified as coastal waters in a mountainous area with low stability. The beach is situated at the mouth of Torrente Cervo, directly influenced by river discharge.

Water

Coastal water body, classified as CWA3 (mountainous area with low stability). The bathing water area extends 0.103 km². The water body is influenced by Torrente Cervo (Cervo Stream). A coastal sewage treatment facility at S.Bartolomeo discharges through a pipeline that crosses the bathing water and discharges offshore approximately 1300 meters from the shore.

Location

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2021-2024: GOOD. The Ligurian Sea is characterized by oligotrophic conditions that prevent cyanobacterial blooms. No exceedances of Ostreopsis ovata limits (30,000 cells/litre) have been recorded at the reference station MARC in Diano Marina from 2020 to 2024.

Risks

Highly urbanized context. During high precipitation events upstream, increased stream flow may transport wastewater downstream to the bathing water. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae proliferation has been documented in Liguria in recent years, though at levels below regulatory limits. Inhalation of aerosol from Ostreopsis ovata can cause temporary and reversible respiratory irritation and fever in sensitive individuals.
