Fuldasee Bebra-Breitenbach is an excavation lake located in the Fuldaaue floodplain near the Breitenbach district of the city of Bebra, close to federal highway B27. The lake serves as a bathing water body as well as for angling and sailing sports. It has a water surface area of 13.7 hectares and reaches a maximum depth of 6.6 meters. The water contains elevated nutrient levels, which promote algae growth and result in relatively low visibility depth.

Water

Excavation lake (gravel pit lake) with a water surface area of 13.7 hectares, maximum depth of 6.6 meters, and mean depth of 4.44 meters. The water body is used for bathing, angling, sailing, sport diving, and windsurfing.

Location

The bathing site is located in the Breitenbach district of the city of Bebra in Hesse, Germany. The lake is situated in the Fuldaaue floodplain near federal highway B27. Facilities include an adjacent meadow area for sunbathing, toilets, a kiosk, and a supply and disposal station for motorhomes.

Facilities

Toilets, kiosk, motorhome supply and disposal station, sunbathing meadows along the shoreline, small harbour with sailing boats in the eastern part of the lake.

Water Quality

Current classification: Excellent quality. Annual classifications for 2021–2025 are all excellent quality. Water quality is monitored before the season and at least monthly during the season. Indicator bacteria tested are enterococci and Escherichia coli. The lake is classified as eutrophic (LAWA trophy classification: eutroph 1) with medium potential for future cyanobacteria blooms and medium observed occurrence of cyanobacteria during bathing seasons.

Risks

Elevated nutrient levels in water promote algae growth and reduce visibility. Water birds are frequently present at the bathing beach. The lake has potential for cyanobacteria (blue-algae) development, which can cause allergic reactions and skin irritations in swimmers. Medium risk of future cyanobacteria blooms.
