Lille Sandvig is a bathing beach approximately 300 metres long and 10 metres wide located north of Fornæs on the coast of Kattegat in Denmark. The beach is directly adjacent to Fornæs Camping and offers good conditions for recreational fishing. The seabed consists of 63-million-year-old limestone with a hard surface that supports a rich ecosystem including large seaweed plants. Water temperature varies between 10°C and 21°C during the bathing season.

Water

Kattegat salt water. Distance from beach edge to 2 metres depth varies from 10 to 30 metres. The seabed is composed of 63-million-year-old limestone with a relatively even surface near the coast that develops cracks and protrusions with increasing water depth.

Location

Located north of Fornæs on the Kattegat coast. Accessible on foot via the Nordsøruten coastal trail and directly from Fornæs Camping. Parking available at Fornæs Lighthouse approximately 1.5 kilometres south of Lille Sandvig.

Parking at Fornæs Lighthouse (1.5 km south); tables and benches at the beach; Nordsøruten coastal trail; good fishing conditions; seabed suitable for diving.

Season

Bathing season monitoring conducted year-round; water temperature monitoring indicates seasonal variation from 10°C to 21°C.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as excellent based on 2009–2012 monitoring data for E. coli and enterococci. This represents the best possible water quality classification.

Risks

Low risk of faecal contamination from scattered settlements and the campground. Relatively high risk of large seaweed accumulation and beached kelp due to favourable growing conditions on the limestone seabed. Low risk of blue-green algae blooms due to high salinity. Low risk of oxygen depletion. Low risk of chemical pollution from shipping incidents. Pollen accumulation possible in spring and early summer with easterly winds. Rare massive blooms of other microscopic algae.
