Gondarém is an urban beach located in Porto with a wide sand strip and rocky outcrops. The beach is bordered by an urban waterfront and encompasses the Molhe and Gondarém concessions. It is a popular bathing location subject to regular water quality monitoring.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored every two weeks according to Decreto-Lei 135/09 (amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012). Faecal contamination may originate from a stream on the beach, the Ribeira da Ervilheira tributary, rainwater drainage networks, or sewerage networks. Bathing was advised against or prohibited for 4 days during the 2024 bathing season due to short-term pollution events. Cyanobacteria proliferation potential is moderate with a history of bloom occurrences.

Risks

Short-term pollution events may occur due to excessive flow of tributaries during rainfall, which can entrain microbiological load. Untreated effluent discharges may occur in case of sewage treatment plant malfunction. Contamination of rainwater networks or vessel spills may also occur. Cyanobacteria blooms have historically occurred.
