Homem do Leme is a wide sand strip with rocky outcrops bordered by an urban waterfront in Porto. The bathing area encompasses both the Homem do Leme and Aquário beaches. It is subject to biweekly water quality monitoring throughout the bathing season.

Location

Located in Porto municipality. Coordinates: 41.160674°N, 8.686164°W. The site is bordered by an urban waterfront.

Season

June 14 to September 14, 2025. Sampling frequency is every 2 weeks.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified according to Decreto-Lei 135/2009 (amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012). No days of bathing prohibition or advisory due to short-term pollution occurred during the 2024 bathing season. Potential microbiological pollution sources include faecal contamination from Nevogilde creek, local rainwater drainage networks, sewerage networks, and potentially from Riguinha or Aldoar creeks.

Risks

Short-term pollution is unlikely but may occur due to excessive tributary flow during rainfall, untreated effluent discharges from sewage treatment plant malfunctions, rainwater network contamination, or vessel spills. Cyanobacteria have a moderate proliferation potential with a history of blooms. Macroalgae and phytoplankton have low proliferation potential with no historical occurrence.
