Castelo do Queijo is an urban beach with an extensive sand strip bordered by an urban waterfront in Porto. The bathing water is monitored weekly during the official bathing season. Short-term pollution events can occur due to excessive tributary flow during rainfall, untreated effluent discharges from sewage treatment plant malfunctions, rainwater contamination, or vessel contamination.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified according to Decreto-Lei 135/2009 (amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012). Fecal contamination is the primary microbiological pollution concern, potentially originating from the Riguinha tributary, local rainwater drainage and sewerage networks, Leixões Seaport, and the Leça and Douro rivers. Four days of bathing advisory or prohibition due to short-term pollution events were recorded in the 2024 bathing season.

Risks

Short-term pollution likely due to excessive tributary flow during rainfall with microbiological load entrainment, untreated effluent discharges from sewage treatment plant malfunction, rainwater network contamination, and vessel contamination. Cyanobacteria proliferation potential is moderate with historical occurrence of blooms. Phytoplankton proliferation potential is low with no historical occurrence.
