Germany Lake 1 - Excellent

Gorinsee is a natural lake located approximately 1.2 km from Berlin's northern boundary on the Barnim Plateau. The oval-shaped basin covers 21 hectares with a maximum depth of only 2 metres. The lake is largely surrounded by coniferous forest, with the village of Gorinsee located on its southern shore. It has no above-ground inflows or outflows and is fed entirely by groundwater. Water transparency in summer ranges from 0.7 to 2 metres, with seasonal plankton growth causing variations in water clarity.

Water

Natural lake with an area of 20.9 hectares. Maximum depth is 2 metres. Water transparency ranges from 0.7 to 2 metres (mean: 1.3 metres). Water temperature measured from 2021–2024 ranges from 11.3 to 27.7 °C (mean: 22 °C). pH values range from 7.9 to 9 (mean: 8.3). Water level fluctuations are approximately 0.3 metres. The lake is fed exclusively by groundwater with no surface inflows or outflows.

Location

Schönwalde, on the Gorinsee near the town of Gorinsee, approximately 1.2 km from Berlin's northern boundary. A camping site with an extensive beach is located on the southern eastern shore. Parking is available at the campingplatz.

Lifeguard monitoring. Camping site with beach facilities. Information signs for water conditions.

Season

Monitoring conducted year-round, with four-weekly testing by the health authority.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent for monitoring periods 2016–2019, 2017–2020, 2018–2021, 2019–2022, 2020–2023, and 2021–2024. Escherichia coli 95th percentile: 127–271 CFU/100 ml. Intestinal enterococci 95th percentile: 69–108 CFU/100 ml. No single-value exceedances of microbiological parameters were recorded. Freshwater lake with salinity below 0.5 ‰.

Risks

Risk of swimmer's itch (cercarial dermatitis) exists. Seasonal plankton growth leads to water turbidity and reduced visibility. High pH values indicate intensive plankton growth.
