Liepnitzsee is a natural lake located 8 km north of Berlin's city boundary, formed at the end of the last ice age in a meltwater channel. The lake covers 115 hectares with a maximum depth of 17.5 metres and contains the 34-hectare island Große Werder, which is accessible by ferry. The lake is fed primarily by groundwater and the Hellmühler Fließ stream. The surrounding catchment area is over 90% forested with only 4% used for agriculture, providing good conditions for maintaining clear water quality.
