Wandlitzer See is a natural lake located approximately 10 km north of Berlin's city boundary in the Barnim Nature Park. With a surface area of 205 hectares and a maximum depth of 24.5 metres, it is the largest and deepest lake in the region. The lake was formed around 10,000 years ago by melting glaciers creating a meltwater channel. It has stable summer temperature stratification and displays high water transparency with summer visibility depths between 1.5 and 4 metres in open water. The lake experiences summer oxygen deficiency in deep water, indicating elevated nutrient levels despite its naturally oligotrophic character.
