Granja is an urban beach with a small sand strip bordered by an urban waterfront. The beach has a sandy and rocky morphology and is strongly eroded. It is located in Vila Nova de Gaia along the Douro River basin.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored every 3 weeks. No days of bathing prohibition or advisory occurred due to short-term pollution events in the 2024 bathing season. Potential microbiological pollution sources include faecal contamination from the local sewerage network and a creek (ribeira da Granja) that empties near the beach.

Risks

Short-term pollution is unlikely but may occur due to excessive flow of a tributary during rainfall events, which can entrain microbiological loads. Untreated effluent discharge may also occur if the wastewater pumping station malfunctions. Cyanobacteria have a moderate proliferation potential with a history of bloom occurrence. Macroalgae and phytoplankton have low proliferation potential with no history of occurrence.
