Marbelo is an urban beach with an extensive sand strip in Vila Nova de Gaia. It is located along the Douro river basin and features sandy morphology. The bathing water is monitored regularly under Portuguese bathing water regulations.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified according to Decreto-Lei 135/09 (amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012). Sampling frequency is every 3 weeks. No days of bathing advisories or prohibitions due to short-term pollution events were recorded during the 2024 bathing season. Potential microbiological pollution sources include faecal contamination from the local sanitation network and the Ribeira de Atiães tributary.

Risks

Short-term pollution is unlikely but may occur due to excessive surface flow from drainage networks and tributaries during rainfall events, potentially carrying microbiological loads. Pollution may also occur due to malfunctions in the wastewater lifting station. Cyanobacteria proliferation has a moderate potential with a history of bloom occurrences. Macroalgae and phytoplankton have low proliferation potential with no history of occurrences.
