Mar e Sol is an urban beach with an extensive sand strip bordered by a line of dunes. It has sandy morphology and is located in Vila Nova de Gaia. The beach is monitored for bathing water quality according to Portuguese regulations.

June 14 to September 14, 2025.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified according to Decreto-Lei 135/2009 as amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012. Monitoring frequency is every 3 weeks. No days of bathing prohibition or advisory occurred due to short-term pollution events in the 2024 bathing season.

Risks

Short-term pollution is unlikely but may occur due to excessive flow of a tributary during rainfall, which can cause entrainment of microbiological load, or due to discharge of untreated effluents if the wastewater pumping station malfunctions. Potential sources of microbiological contamination include faecal contamination from the local sewerage network and the tributary ribeira de Espírito Santo. Cyanobacteria proliferation potential is moderate with a history of blooms occurring. Macroalgae and phytoplankton proliferation potential is low with no history of occurrence.
