Grenå Strand is a sandy beach approximately 2.7 km long and 20 metres wide located in the northwestern part of Norddjurs Municipality in Denmark. The beach consists of sand with few stones and has a sandy seabed. The distance from the shoreline to 2 metres depth is approximately 170–270 metres. The beach is classified as excellent quality across all five monitoring stations based on regular testing of E. coli and enterococci over a four-year period.

Water

Coastal bathing water in the Kattegat Sea. The beach is approximately 2.7 km long and 20 metres wide. Seabed is sandy. Distance from shoreline to 2 metres depth is 170–270 metres. Water temperature varies between 10 °C and 21 °C during the bathing season. Water is salt water. Surface water current direction is predominantly toward the southwest, though variation occurs depending on wind conditions.

Location

Located in Grenå, northwestern Norddjurs Municipality, Denmark. Access to the beach is available at multiple points along Katholm Strandvej and Klitten via small paths. Several large car parks are available at Katholm Strandvej and Klitten. GPS reference point: Grenå Strand, Katholm Strandvej, 8500 Grenaa.

Facilities

Four large car parks. Accessible toilets. Shower facilities at three toilet locations. Winter bathing shelter. Ramp to viewing platform for disabled access. Rescue stations positioned along the beach. Helicopter landing pad. Waste sorting. Beach volleyball. Nordsøruten cycling route runs along the beach.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent at all five monitoring stations. Classification is based on regular testing over a four-year period using E. coli and enterococci analysis. Monitoring stations are located at: 600 metres before Grenåen, Grenå Strand, Polderev (two stations), and Ramskovgård.

Risks

Fecal contamination risk from sewer overflow in Grenå during southward current flow; risk from yacht toilet tank discharge is relatively low. Possible cyanobacteria blooms in late summer from southern Kattegat, though risk is very low. Low risk of large algae accumulations due to good water exchange. Possible pollen accumulation in spring–early summer with easterly winds. Low risk of oxygen depletion, chemical pollution, or oil spills. Seaweed washup can occur with decomposition producing harmful bacteria.
