Grenå Strand is a sandy beach approximately 2.7 kilometres long and 20 metres wide located in the northwestern part of Norddjurs Municipality. The beach starts at the harbour and extends to the end of Katholm Strandvej. The seabed is sandy with a distance of approximately 170 to 270 metres from the water's edge to 2 metres depth. The beach consists primarily of sand with few stones, though some areas have washed-up seaweed and shells.

Water

Saltwater coastal beach. The beach is approximately 2.7 kilometres long and 20 metres wide. The seabed is sandy. Distance from water's edge to 2 metres depth is approximately 170 to 270 metres. Water temperature varies between 10°C and 21°C during the bathing season. Dominant surface water current direction is towards the southwest, though wind-driven current can vary significantly with wind direction.

Location

Grenå Strand, Katholm Strandvej, 8500 Grenå. Access to the beach is available at multiple locations along Katholm Strandvej and Klitten via small paths. Several large car parks are located at Katholm Strandvej and Klitten.

Facilities

Four large car parks; disabled toilets; showers at three toilet facilities; winter bathing facilities; wheelchair access ramp to viewing area; lifeguard posts positioned along the beach; helicopter landing pad; waste sorting; beach volleyball; Nordsøruten cycling route passes along the beach.

Season

Monitoring period covers the bathing season. Water temperature ranges from 10°C to 21°C during the bathing season.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as 'Excellent' at all 5 monitoring stations. Classification is based on analysis of E. coli and enterococci from samples collected regularly over the preceding 4-year period. Monitoring stations: Station 22 (600 metres south of Grenåen) - Excellent; Station 23 (Grenå Strand) - Excellent; Station 24 (Polderev) - Excellent; Station 25 (Polderev Plantage) - Excellent; Station 29 (Ramskovgård) - Excellent.

Risks

Possible short-term pollution sources include: fecal contamination from combined sewer overflows in Grenå, faulty pumps or ineffective drainage in holiday home areas, emptying of toilet tanks from pleasure boats, and activities at Grenå Harbour (oil spills, boat protection agents). Blue-green algae risk is very low due to high salinity. Risk of mass algal blooms other than blue-green algae is low. Risk of seaweed accumulation is low due to good water exchange and local current conditions. Risk of oxygen depletion is low. Risk of chemical pollution is low. Invasive Pacific oysters are not present. Pollen accumulations are a recurring phenomenon that can locally cause poor bathing water quality.
