Grenå Strand is a sandy beach approximately 2.7 kilometres long and 20 metres wide, located in the northwestern part of Norddjurs Municipality in Denmark. The beach starts at the harbour and extends to the end of Katholm Strandvej. The seabed is sandy with few stones, and the distance from the shoreline to 2 metres depth ranges from 170 to 270 metres. Water quality at all five monitoring stations is classified as excellent, the highest possible rating. Dogs must be kept on leads from 1 April to 30 September.

Water

Sandy beach approximately 2.7 kilometres long and 20 metres wide. The seabed is sandy. Distance from shoreline to 2 metres depth is approximately 170 to 270 metres. Water temperature varies between 10°C and 21°C during the bathing season. Saltwater body.

Location

Grenå Strand, Katholm Strandvej, 8500 Grenå, in the northwestern part of Norddjurs Municipality. Access to the beach is available at multiple points along Katholm Strandvej and Klitten via small paths. Several large car parks are available near Katholm Strandvej and Klitten.

Facilities

Four large car parks, disabled toilets, shower facilities at three toilet locations, winter bathing cabin, wheelchair ramp to viewing platform, lifeguard posts along the beach, helicopter landing pad, waste sorting facilities, beach volleyball, and the North Sea Route coastal path.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent at all five monitoring stations based on regular monitoring of E. coli and enterococci over a four-year period. Classification is determined by analysis of faecal indicators. Potential sources of short-term pollution include: combined sewer overflows from Grenå town; discharge from sewage treatment plants due to operational failure or incorrect connections; emptying of toilet tanks from pleasure boats; pollution from Grenå Harbour; occasional blue-green algae in late summer; accumulation of seaweed; and pollen in spring/early summer.

Risks

Risk of short-term faecal pollution from combined sewer overflows when current flows southward towards Grenå Strand. Low risk from summer cottage area sewage. Low risk from pleasure boat toilet tank emptying. Some risk from harbour activities. Very low risk of blue-green algae blooms due to high salinity. Low risk of other microscopic algae blooms. Low risk of seaweed accumulation. Low risk of oxygen depletion. Low risk of chemical pollution. Occasional pollen accumulation in spring/early summer. Pacific oysters not present.
