Großer Weserbogen is an artificial lake in the lowlands used for bathing. The bathing water has been classified as excellent for four consecutive years (2020–2023). The lake receives water directly from the Weser River and is located adjacent to a heavily visited campground during the summer season.

Water

Artificial freshwater lake. Water temperature ranges from 20–24 °C with an average of 22 °C. pH value ranges from 8.25–8.9 with an average of 8.6. Conductivity ranges from 820–894 µS/cm with an average of 865 µS/cm. Water transparency ranges from 1.2–3.5 metres with an average of 2.35 metres. Water exchange time is approximately 30 days or less, maintained through groundwater circulation.

Location

Located in the Minden-Lübbecke district, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The bathing area has a shoreline of approximately 100 metres.

Water Quality

The bathing water received an excellent classification in 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023. Monitored water quality parameters show stable conditions. Rainwater discharge and agricultural runoff from the surrounding area are present but assessed as having no relevant impact on water quality. Camping activities in the immediate vicinity are also assessed as having no relevant impact.

Risks

Frequent bird activity occurs on the water. Macroalgae (filamentous algae) have required mechanical removal using a mowing boat within the past two years. No cyanobacterial blooms were observed in the past four years, and the risk of future mass development of cyanobacteria is assessed as none. No cercaria (duck flea) findings were recorded during the 2009 season.
