Grüner See is a small lake in Witzenhausen-Hundelshausen created in 1940 when a gypsum quarry filled with groundwater and surface water. The lake has an area of 0.4 hectares and maximum depth of 4 meters, located in a fractured upland region surrounded by steep slopes. The water is rich in nutrients, allowing algae to develop extensively, resulting in low visibility and turbid water with a characteristic green colour. The lake is accessed via wooden jetties and can attract up to 100 visitors on fine summer days.
