Havnebad Køge Marina is a newly opened bathing spot that began welcoming swimmers in 2015. Located in connection with Køge Marina and adjacent to Nordstranden, the bathing area covers approximately 20,000 square metres with depths reaching up to 3 metres. The basin is bounded by stone embankments toward land and stone jetties toward Køge Bay, with openings allowing connection to the bay. Bathing platforms provide access to the water.

Water

A bathing basin in Køge Bay covering approximately 20,000 square metres with maximum depth of 3 metres. The basin is separated from Køge Bay by stone jetties with openings providing water exchange. Water connection also via piped portions of the former municipal watercourse Ellebæk Nord.

Location

Located in Køge, Denmark, connected to Køge Marina and south of Nordstranden. Access via the road 'Bådehavnen' leading directly to the car park, then via gravel paths to the bathing area. Gravel and asphalt car parks with disabled parking spaces are available.

Facilities

Rescue stations, information board with water analysis results, toilets with disabled facilities, gravel and asphalt car parks with disabled parking, bathing platforms, benches, waste bins, and flag pole.

Season

Official monitoring period: 1 May to 1 September. At least 10 water samples are collected during this period.

Water Quality

Classified as 'Excellent quality' based on bacterial analysis data from 2014 and 2015. Monitoring follows threshold values for E. coli and enterococci per 100 ml. The municipality samples water at least 10 times between 1 May and 1 September annually. Occasional slightly elevated values for faecal coliform bacteria may occur once every few years during the bathing season, but risk of substantial contamination (>2000 E. coli per 100 ml) is very low and has not occurred in the past 4 years.

Risks

Heavy rainfall can cause discharges from sewage system overflows containing E. coli bacteria; avoiding bathing for 4-5 days after heavy rain is recommended. Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) and phytoplankton blooms, particularly in warm periods following wet weather; observations from 2012-2015 show risk of significant algal blooms approximately every other year, typically late in the season. Macroalgae (seaweed) problems are not expected in the bathing area itself but occur on nearby Nordstranden. Sudden contamination from boat incidents, slurry tanks, or sewage line breaks is possible.
