Ølsemagle Revle syd og nord is an urban beach area north of Køge in Denmark, consisting of two contiguous bathing zones along a sand barrier system. The beach is located on state-owned land managed by Naturstyrelsen Østsjælland. The lagoon behind the beach is not suitable for bathing due to low water exchange and high nutrient content. The area is designated as a wildlife reserve and Natura 2000 protected site due to its geological significance and rich birdlife.

Water

Coastal water in Køge Bay. The bathing area is located along a sand barrier system (Ølsemagle Revle and Staunings Ø). Water depth data for the beach area are not available. Dominant wave direction is easterly, perpendicular to the shore. Wave formation is moderate. Dominant wind direction is easterly.

Location

North of Køge, east of Ølsemagle. Access is via Københavnsvej, then along the road called Revlen to the parking area near the ice cream kiosk. From the parking area, visitors cross a 300-meter dam over the lagoon to reach the sand beach. Parking is available at the ice cream kiosk area.

Official monitoring season is 1 May to 1 September.

Water Quality

Water is classified as Good Quality based on bacterial analysis data from 2012–2015. Monitoring is carried out from 1 May to 1 September with a minimum of 10 water samples collected annually. Køge Bay generally experiences nutrient loading, particularly nitrogen, and was not expected to achieve good ecological status by 2015. Elevated coliform and enterococci values occur most years during the bathing season, sometimes following heavy rainfall. Occasional exceedances of E. coli have been recorded, particularly after heavy rain events causing combined sewer overflows.

Risks

Heavy rainfall causes discharges from combined sewer overflow structures, potentially introducing fecal bacteria into bathing water. Risk of cyanobacterial blooms, with observations from 2012–2015 indicating significant algal blooms approximately every two years, typically late in the season. Skensved Stream (Skensved Å) shows regularly elevated levels of fecal bacteria due to three overflow structures. Eight additional overflow structures discharge into the lagoon via Snogbækken (2), Ellebækken (1), and directly to the lagoon (5). Køge Treatment Plant discharges treated wastewater 700 meters offshore at a depth of approximately 3.8 meters, though the risk from this outlet is considered minor based on long-term monitoring.
