Søndre Strand is an urban beach area in Køge Bay near Køge city. The beach was extended through sand dredging in connection with the development of a new district at Søndre Harbour and became ready for the 2015 bathing season. The beach stretches approximately 900 metres south from Søndre Harbour and is approximately 120 metres wide at its broadest point. It features fine sand and shallow water conditions.

Water

Køge Bay is a shallow water area with depths up to approximately 12 metres. The seabed consists of an irregular mixture of sand and moraine clay. The beach and shallow areas south of Køge Harbour consist of fine sand. Water depth decreases gradually in natural conditions, but more steeply in areas of artificial fill.

Location

Located immediately south of Køge city and Køge Harbour in Køge Municipality, Denmark. Parking available at the Comwell Køge car park on Strandvejen 111, approximately 250 metres from the beach via a public path (Strandstien). Alternative parking at Søndre Havn public car park, approximately 775 metres from the beach via Carlsensvej, Strandpromenaden, Søndre Badevej, and Voldstien.

Facilities

Lifeguard posts, beach shelter with latest water analysis results, disabled parking, toilets, bathing platform, waste bins, benches, flag pole, grilling area (Køge Kyst).

Season

Official monitoring period: 1 May to 1 September.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as Good based on bacterial analysis data from 2012–2015. Classification determined using E. coli and enterococci measurements (threshold for Good: enterococci 200 per 100 ml, E. coli 500 per 100 ml). Monitoring conducted at least 10 times between 1 May and 1 September. Køge Bay coastal waters are burdened with nutrients, particularly nitrogen. Risk of occasional elevated faecal coliform values during bathing season, but risk of substantial contamination (>2000 E. coli per 100 ml) is small.

Risks

Risk of underflow and pothole formations in shallow water areas. Heavy rainfall can cause sewage overflow discharge. Occasional elevated faecal coliform bacteria levels, particularly following heavy rain. Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms, especially in warm periods following rain. Significant risk of macroalgae (sea lettuce) accumulation, particularly in warm conditions with easterly winds. Potential sudden contamination from boats, manure tanks, and sewage pipes.
