Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Staunings Ø is a 400-meter-long sandy beach in Solrød Kommune, Denmark, located on the southern part of the municipality's coastline. The beach is 20–30 meters wide with fine sand and gently sloping water conditions suitable for children. A bathing bridge is installed during the bathing season from 1 June to 1 September. The beach is bordered by lagoon lakes with reed forests and diverse bird populations throughout the year.

Water

The water body is classified as brackish water in Køge Bay. The seabed consists of fine sand. Water depth under 2 meters extends approximately 125 meters from the shore. Current direction is primarily from the south or north based on assessments from 2006–2010. The beach is marked by a blue line on the seabed.

Location

The beach is accessed from Jersie Strandvej, turning at the roundabout toward Jersie Strandpark. From the parking area, a 500-meter walking path leads through a protected natural area to the beach. Dedicated parking for disabled vehicles is available. The beach is the southernmost of four beaches in Solrød Kommune.

Facilities

Lifeguard post, trash bins, toilet facilities with drinking water, parking, rescue ring, and designated disabled parking. A bathing bridge is installed seasonally.

Season

Bathing season runs from 1 June to 1 September. Routine water quality monitoring occurs throughout this period.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as Excellent, meeting required standards based on control samples from 2018–2021. Monitoring is conducted throughout the bathing season using indicator bacteria (E. coli and enterococci) to assess faecal contamination levels.

Risks

The Skensved Å stream outlet is located 800 meters south and carries risk of faecal bacteria, especially during rainfall; bathing near the outlet is discouraged. Macroalgae (seaweed) accumulation in the water's edge poses a risk and can harbour bacteria. Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) and phytoplankton blooms is low but possible during warm periods with nutrient-rich water. Glass shards, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills can occasionally occur. Dogs are prohibited from 1 April to 31 August.
