Havnevigen Badezone is an unattended bathing zone located on the southern part of Islands Brygge in Copenhagen. The zone is situated in a Y-shaped cove approximately 180 meters long and up to 70 meters wide. The northern section features a sand beach measuring 140 by 15 meters, while the remaining area consists of grass, stones, and a concrete staircase. Water exchange is controlled by pumps operating as needed, and the zone is open to the public year-round.

Water

A Y-shaped cove in saltwater. The cove measures approximately 180 meters in length and approximately 70 meters at its widest point before branching. Water depth ranges from 0.6 to 2.0 meters. Water exchange is controlled by pumps. Water flow is weak, predominantly from the eastern direction due to pump operation.

Location

Southern Islands Brygge, Copenhagen. The bathing zone is accessible year-round to the public.

Facilities

Rescue ladders are present. No disabled access facilities. A warning lamp on site alerts to poor bathing water quality.

Season

Open year-round. Official monitoring period covers the bathing season with the water quality section reviewed annually before the bathing season starts.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (2020–2023). Risk of cyanobacteria is assessed as relatively low. Risk of phytoplankton growth and macroalgae is assessed as relatively low. The nearest sewage overflow structure is located approximately 120 meters from the bathing zone in Copenhagen's South Harbor and overflows on average twice yearly. During periods of intensive rainfall, overflow discharge may contaminate bathing water with bacteria. Pumps are shut down if contaminated water is detected at the inlet to prevent water from entering Havnevigen. Monitoring occurs at least 20 times per year.

Risks

Risk of contamination with bacteria during periods of heavy rainfall due to sewage overflow structures. Glass shards, waste, and chemical pollution including oil spills can occasionally occur.
