Kalvebod Bølge Badezone is an unmanned bathing zone located on Kalvebod Brygge in Copenhagen. The zone consists of two basins separated by rope barriers and flotation booms, with a water depth of approximately 6 metres. The water is saltwater with weak to strong currents predominantly flowing in northerly and southerly directions. Swimming takes place at one's own risk as the facility is not supervised by lifeguards. The bathing zone is open for swimming throughout the entire year.

Water

Saltwater bathing zone consisting of two basins. Water depth approximately 6 metres. Water currents are weak to strong, predominantly from northerly and southerly directions.

Location

Located on Kalvebod Brygge in Copenhagen. The responsible authority is Copenhagen Municipality, Technical and Environmental Administration, Njalsgade 13, 1st floor, Postbox 449, 1505 Copenhagen V.

Facilities

Rescue posts and rescue ladders present. Disabled access: wheelchair-accessible surface at the bathing zone and on the bathing jetty with level-free access to the bathing jetty. The bathing zone is included in Copenhagen Municipality's online warning system (Badevandsudsigten), which continuously warns of bathing water quality based on forecasts. A lamp at the site will warn of poor bathing water quality. The 'Badevand' application for smartphones (Android Market or App Store) provides bathing water forecasts.

Season

The bathing zone is open for swimming throughout the entire year. Monitoring occurs minimum 20 times per year.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (2020–2023). Risk of cyanobacteria assessed as low. Risk of phytoplankton growth and macroalgae assessed as low. The bathing zone was closed with a red flag for a total of 213 hours during the 2023 bathing season, corresponding to 7.2 % of the time. Sewage overflow structures to Copenhagen Harbour are located in Copenhagen South Harbour and Inner Harbour, approximately 200 metres from the bathing zone. Both overflows are in use on average approximately 4 times per year. Intensive rainfall can result in bacterial contamination from these overflows. No other known significant pollution sources in the bathing profile area.

Risks

Sewage overflow risk during heavy rainfall from overflow structures located approximately 200 metres away. Occasional glass shards, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills may occur. The zone is not supervised by lifeguards.
