Houstrup Strand is a bathing area located in Varde Municipality on the west coast of Denmark, approximately 6.5 km southwest of Nørre Nebel and facing the North Sea. The beach and seafloor consist primarily of sand, with gravel and stones occasionally present. The beach width varies from 90 to 130 metres depending on tidal conditions. The bathing water has achieved the highest quality classification of excellent based on analysis of indicator bacteria over the last four years.

Water

North Sea (Vesterhavet) bathing area. The seabed consists primarily of sand with occasional gravel and stones. Beach width ranges from 90 to 130 metres depending on tidal state. Water salinity is approximately 3%. Depth and current conditions are highly variable due to tidal movement, currents, sediment deposition, and weather conditions. The water typically becomes deep rapidly. Current direction in the North Sea is predominantly northward, with southward movement near the coast.

Location

Houstrup Strand is situated approximately 6.5 km southwest of Nørre Nebel in Varde Municipality, Denmark. It is approximately 5.3 km south of Nymindegab Strand and approximately 2.8 km north of Henne Strand. Parking is available approximately 220 metres from the beach.

Water Quality

Bathing water classification: Excellent (UDMÆRKET). This classification is based on analysis of the last four years of samples. Annual classifications: 2023 Excellent, 2022 Excellent, 2021 Excellent, 2020 Excellent. Water is analysed for Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci as indicator bacteria for faecal contamination. No direct wastewater or stream discharges affect water quality. The hinterland consists predominantly of natural areas including heathland and bog. High water exchange and salinity minimize contamination risk from bathers.

Risks

Depth and current conditions are highly variable due to tidal movement and weather. Water becomes deep rapidly. Sandbanks parallel to the coast can form revels, between which dangerous rip currents can develop flowing from the beach toward waves. These currents can be strong enough to prevent swimming against them; swimmers must allow themselves to be carried out and return to shore as the current weakens. Phytoplankton and foam-forming algae may occasionally be driven ashore by wind and weather; these are typically non-toxic but can irritate skin and may harbour bacteria causing gastrointestinal illness. Sea bacteria (Vibrio and Shewanella species) naturally occur in seawater and can cause illness through ingestion or skin contact, particularly in immunocompromised individuals; however, these typically do not occur in large numbers at the North Sea. Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) do not occur at the North Sea due to insufficient salinity. Macroalgae typically do not occur in large numbers on the west coast.
